THE SHORTS THAT STOP TRAFFIC — TORONTO, 1937
Two women. A pair of shorts. A street full of curious looks.
Toronto, Canada, 1937.
Two young women walk through a busy city street wearing white outfits with unusually short trousers. Around them, men in suits and hats turn their attention toward the scene.
The photograph belongs to a series documenting women's fashion in 1930s Toronto, associated with Alexandra Studio and preserved in the City of Toronto Archives.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Over time, the image acquired an extraordinary story: the women were supposedly among the first to wear shorts in public, causing such a sensation that a distracted driver crashed his car.
But the famous story is almost certainly a myth.
Other photographs from the same series show the women in different positions and locations. Rather than documenting a spontaneous traffic accident, the pictures appear to belong to a staged photographic session.
The image tells us something about changing fashions and public attitudes toward women's clothing. The legend tells us something else: how easily a photograph can acquire a history of its own.
THE DESIGN
This black hoodie features the archival street photograph on the back, accompanied by the vintage-inspired headline The Shorts That Stop Traffic and the date Toronto, 1937.
The composition recalls an illustrated newspaper feature from the 1930s, combining documentary photography with period-inspired typography.
The front remains plain black, creating a deliberately understated contrast with the photographic design on the back.
