ISAAC HAYES — BLACK EXPO, CHICAGO 1973
A soul legend at the piano. Gold chains, dark sunglasses, and the unmistakable atmosphere of 1970s Black American music.
Chicago, October 1973.
Isaac Hayes (1942–2008) performs at the International Amphitheatre during the annual PUSH Black Expo.
Seated at the piano, bare-chested and wearing his signature sunglasses, gold chains, and bright red trousers, Hayes embodies the distinctive visual style of early 1970s soul and funk.
The photograph was taken by John H. White, an acclaimed American photojournalist whose work documented everyday life and African American culture in Chicago.
ISAAC HAYES — THE SOUND OF SOUL
A singer, songwriter, producer, and musician, Hayes helped transform American soul music through his orchestral arrangements, extended compositions, and unmistakable baritone voice.
His 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul challenged conventional pop-song formats with ambitious, emotionally intense performances.
In 1972, Hayes won an Academy Award for Theme from Shaft, becoming the first Black composer to receive an Oscar for Best Original Song.
By 1973, he was one of the defining figures of American popular music.
BLACK EXPO — MORE THAN A CONCERT
The annual Black Expo was organized by Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), associated with civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.
The event combined entertainment, education, exhibitions, entrepreneurship, and celebrations of African American history and achievement.
It offered a public space in which Black cultural identity, economic opportunity, and artistic expression came together.
Hayes's performance belonged to this broader atmosphere of cultural confidence and visibility.
THE PHOTOGRAPH
John H. White photographed the event as part of DOCUMERICA, a documentary photography project sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The dramatic contrast between the illuminated piano, Hayes's brightly coloured clothing, and the dark stage gives the photograph an almost theatrical intensity.
The original image is preserved in the U.S. National Archives.
THE DESIGN
This black V-neck T-shirt combines historical photography with typography inspired by American soul and funk concert posters of the early 1970s.
The front features White's photograph of Isaac Hayes performing at the piano.
The back displays bold, warm-coloured vintage lettering:
ISAAC HAYES
BLACK EXPO
CHICAGO · 1973
The typography uses amber, orange, cream, and red tones, echoing the visual language of the period.
Together, the two sides identify the performer, the event, and the historical moment captured by the camera.
