THREE MOVEMENTS — MARGARET SEVERN

One dancer. Three movements. A moment in the history of modern dance.

In the early 1920s, American photographer Arnold Genthe photographed a young dancer named Margaret Severn.

On a beach, dressed in a light, flowing costume, Severn performed a series of expressive poses. Her arms, hands, and body formed delicate, carefully controlled movements against the open landscape.

Nearly a century later, these photographs reveal a remarkable figure in the history of American dance.

MARGARET SEVERN — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE IMAGES

Born in Alabama in 1901, Margaret Severn began dancing as a child and trained in both classical ballet and the emerging forms of expressive dance.

She studied with Ruth St. Denis and performed in theatrical productions, cabarets, and vaudeville shows during the 1910s and 1920s.

Severn became particularly celebrated for her extraordinary mask dances. Working initially with masks created by artist Wladyslaw T. Benda, she developed performances in which a change of mask could transform an entire character.

Her career later took her to Europe, where she worked with major figures of modern ballet, including Bronislava Nijinska.

Margaret Severn died in 1997, leaving behind an extensive photographic and documentary record of an unusually varied artistic life.

THREE MOVEMENTS — THE DESIGN

This Reading Frames composition brings together three separate photographs of Margaret Severn, taken by Arnold Genthe in the 1920s.

Removed from their original backgrounds, the figures are arranged against black fabric in a new, circular relationship.

Three individual poses become a single choreography.

The repetition suggests motion, while the photographs themselves remain perfectly still.

What Genthe recorded as separate moments is transformed into a contemporary visual composition exploring rhythm, gesture, and the photographic representation of movement.

THE SWEATSHIRT

A black crewneck sweatshirt featuring three monochrome photographic figures on the front.

The minimalist arrangement allows the dancers' gestures to define the composition, without additional lettering or decorative elements.

The back remains plain black.
