Emotions on Demand — Duchenne's Electric Experiments, c. 1855 | Vintage Photography T-Shirt
EMOTIONS ON DEMAND — PARIS, c. 1855
A human face transformed by electricity. A remarkable experiment from the early history of neurology and photography.
Paris, France, c. 1855.
This extraordinary photograph documents the experiments of Guillaume-Benjamin-Amand Duchenne de Boulogne (1806–1875), a French physician and pioneering neurologist who investigated the relationship between facial muscles and human expression.
Using electrodes connected to an electrical apparatus, Duchenne stimulated individual muscles of the face, producing expressions that could resemble surprise, fear, pain, or other emotional states.
These were real medical experiments, not theatrical performances.
THE SCIENCE OF EXPRESSION
During the 1850s, Duchenne developed a systematic approach to studying facial movements through electrical stimulation.
His experiments were documented through photography, sometimes in collaboration with Adrien Tournachon, the younger brother of the famous photographer Nadar.
The resulting images were published in his influential 1862 work, Mécanisme de la physionomie humaine (The Mechanism of Human Facial Expression).
Duchenne believed that particular facial muscles corresponded to recognizable expressions. His work became an important early contribution to the scientific study of human facial movement and expression.
The photograph also raises questions about the relationship between scientific observation, the human subject, and the camera.
THE DESIGN
This black Gildan Softstyle T-shirt features a two-sided design inspired by nineteenth-century medical encyclopedias.
On the front, an engraved-style typographic composition reads:
EMOTIONS ON DEMAND
EXPERIMENTS IN FACIAL EXPRESSION
PARIS · c. 1855
On the back, the historical photograph shows Duchenne conducting facial electrical stimulation on a human subject.
The title is a contemporary interpretation: the experiment produced muscular expressions, not necessarily the emotions themselves.
