War Has No Sense of Humor — WWI Gas Masks, 1915 | Premium Oversized T-Shirt
WAR HAS NO SENSE OF HUMOR — THE GREAT WAR, 1915
Two soldiers. One donkey. Three gas masks. An absurd image from a war that was anything but funny.
Germany, First World War, c. 1915. Exact location unknown.
Two German soldiers sit beside a donkey. All three wear gas masks.
At first glance, the photograph appears almost comical. The soldiers' elaborate protective equipment, the donkey's long ears, and the strange arrangement of three masked faces create a scene of unmistakable visual absurdity.
Yet behind this unusual portrait lies one of the most terrifying developments of modern warfare: the introduction of poison gas on the battlefield.
WHEN WAR BECAME CHEMICAL
In April 1915, German forces launched a large-scale chlorine gas attack near Ypres, Belgium, marking a major escalation in chemical warfare.
As poisonous gases became part of the conflict, armies developed increasingly sophisticated protective equipment.
Horses, mules, and donkeys were indispensable to military logistics. They transported ammunition, food, equipment, and supplies, often operating dangerously close to the front.
Protecting animals from chemical weapons therefore became a practical military concern.
The donkey in this photograph appears to be wearing a gas mask adapted for an animal — a striking reminder that industrial warfare endangered more than human soldiers.
A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE ABSURD
We do not know the precise circumstances in which this photograph was taken.
It may have been a demonstration of protective equipment, a staged portrait, or an informal moment among soldiers.
What we can see is an extraordinary meeting of military technology, human behaviour, and an animal caught up in the machinery of war.
The photograph seems humorous precisely because its underlying circumstances were so serious.
THE DESIGN
This premium AS Colour oversized T-shirt combines archival photography with typography inspired by European military publications and printed ephemera of the First World War.
On the front, a distressed ivory-coloured inscription reads:
WAR HAS NO SENSE OF HUMOR
1915 · THE GREAT WAR
On the back, the historical photograph shows the two German soldiers and their masked donkey.
The design brings the image and its interpretation together: one side presents the apparent absurdity, the other reveals the historical reality.
The premium oversized silhouette and faded black finish give the archival imagery a distinctive contemporary setting.
