THE ART OF STRENGTH

One woman. An extraordinary feat of strength. Three variations of the same image.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, female strongwomen were among the most remarkable performers in European and American circuses and variety theatres.

They lifted enormous weights, bent iron bars, challenged male wrestlers, and sometimes raised fully grown men above their heads.

Their performances challenged conventional expectations of femininity, combining physical power with theatrical elegance.

THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The archival image behind this design shows a female strength performer lifting another person high above her head.

The performer's identity has not been conclusively established, but the pose belongs to a recognizable tradition of circus strength and balancing acts.

One of the most celebrated strongwomen of the period was Katie Sandwina (1884–1952), who famously lifted her husband, Max Heymann, above her head during her performances.

Such acts transformed physical strength into public spectacle. The audience witnessed not merely an athletic achievement, but a carefully staged reversal of familiar assumptions about gender and power.

THE DESIGN

For this Reading Frames composition, the original photographic figure has been isolated from its background and repeated three times in progressively smaller sizes.

The descending arrangement creates a visual rhythm, turning a single historical performance into an almost surreal sequence.

The same feat appears again and again, changing only in scale.

Printed on the back of a black oversized sweatshirt, the figures stand against the dark fabric without additional lettering.

The design allows the archival image to speak for itself.
