SOLDIERS WITHOUT GUNS — Adolph Treidler, 1944 | Vintage WWII Poster Oversized T-Shirt
SOLDIERS WITHOUT GUNS — 1944
Three women. Three kinds of work. One powerful message from the American home front during World War II.
United States, 1944.
Soldiers Without Guns is an American wartime propaganda poster created by Adolph Treidler (1886–1981) and published by the U.S. Government Printing Office as an official U.S. Army poster.
The illustration depicts three women representing different forms of wartime labor: an office worker seated at a typewriter, a welder wearing protective headgear, and an industrial worker in a blue uniform and red patterned headscarf.
Beneath them, a bold yellow banner carries the message:
SOLDIERS WITHOUT GUNS
WOMEN ON THE HOME FRONT
During World War II, millions of American women entered factories, offices, shipyards, and other workplaces supporting the military and civilian economy.
As men were mobilized for military service, women took on occupations that had previously been largely reserved for men.
They assembled aircraft, manufactured equipment, worked in communications, and performed essential administrative and industrial tasks.
Government posters encouraged women to participate in the war effort, presenting their work as a form of patriotic service.
Treidler's illustration belongs to this campaign of industrial and social mobilization.
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE OF WARTIME PROPAGANDA
The three women are portrayed with confidence and determination. Their different uniforms and tools represent the diversity of women's contributions to the war effort.
The slogan deliberately expands the meaning of the word "soldier."
Military service is no longer represented exclusively by weapons and combat. The poster presents industrial production, technical skills, and administrative work as essential elements of national defense.
At the same time, the image reflects the idealized visual language of wartime propaganda, which celebrated women's participation while simplifying the inequalities and restrictions they continued to encounter.
Today, the poster is both a striking example of 1940s American illustration and a historical document of changing attitudes toward women's work.
