IF HE DOESN'T HAVE A CONDOM — AMERICA RESPONDS TO AIDS

A woman, a difficult conversation, and a remarkably direct message from the history of the AIDS epidemic.

United States, late 1980s–early 1990s.

This striking public health poster belongs to America Responds to AIDS, a nationwide awareness campaign developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Featuring a young woman in a relaxed pose, the poster delivers an unusually candid message:

"If he doesn't have a condom, you just have to take a deep breath and tell him to go get one."

Its message was simple: protecting yourself sometimes requires an uncomfortable conversation.

AMERICA RESPONDS TO AIDS

During the 1980s, the emerging AIDS epidemic transformed public discussions of sexuality, health, and personal responsibility.

Fear, misinformation, and widespread stigma complicated early prevention efforts.

The CDC's America Responds to AIDS campaign sought to communicate practical information about HIV transmission and prevention to a broad American audience.

Rather than relying exclusively on frightening medical imagery, advertisements like this one used everyday language, contemporary photography, and recognizable personal situations.

The message focused on communication between sexual partners and the importance of condom use.

It also challenged a familiar social expectation: that women should avoid difficult conversations about sex.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PUBLIC HEALTH POSTER

The visual language is strikingly understated.

A casually dressed woman sits in a chair, looking directly at the viewer. The photograph resembles a fashion or lifestyle advertisement more than a conventional medical warning.

But the accompanying text transforms the image into an assertion of personal agency.

Today, the poster is a revealing document of a period when public health campaigns were beginning to address sexual relationships with unusual directness.

THE DESIGN

This black T-shirt features a reproduction of the original American public health poster.

Its photographic composition, purple-toned appearance, original typography, and historical message are preserved.
