THE HUMAN SQUIRREL — NEW YORK, c. 1918

A man suspended high above New York. A rope, a skyscraper, and a crowd watching from far below.

New York City, around 1918.

A lone figure climbs a vertical rope alongside a towering building. Far beneath him, the streets disappear into the haze, while the surrounding architecture emphasizes the extraordinary height of his ascent.

At first glance, the photograph might appear to document a construction worker performing a dangerous task.

But this man was not working on the building.

He was an acrobat known as The Human Squirrel.

A SPECTACLE ABOVE THE CITY

During the First World War, public performances and daring stunts were sometimes organized to raise money for war relief.

The Human Squirrel became associated with these fundraising spectacles, climbing to extraordinary heights above New York's busy streets.

His performance combined athletic skill, physical danger, and the theatrical appeal of the rapidly growing American metropolis.

In an era when skyscrapers were transforming the Manhattan skyline, such feats turned modern architecture into an unexpected stage.

The photograph captures an encounter between two forms of modern ambition: the technological achievement of the skyscraper and the seemingly impossible capabilities of the human body.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

The image is attributed to the Times Photo Service and preserved in the collections of the U.S. National Archives, among photographs documenting the American experience during the First World War.

The precise day of the performance and the acrobat's personal identity remain uncertain.

What survives is an extraordinary visual record: one human figure suspended between the city and the sky.

THE DESIGN

This black Bella+Canvas T-shirt creates a dialogue between its front and back.

The front features the original archival photograph, preserving the dramatic vertical composition of the climber, rope, and surrounding skyscrapers.

On the back, vintage theatrical lettering reveals the performer's remarkable nickname:

THE HUMAN SQUIRREL
Times Square, New York · c. 1918

Inspired by American entertainment posters of the early twentieth century, the typography recalls the era of public spectacles and daring urban performances.

Together, the two sides tell a single story: first the extraordinary image, then the identity behind it.
