THE ART OF SUMO — JAPAN, 1868–1880

Two wrestlers. One referee. A moment suspended before the fight.

This black sweatshirt from Reading Frames — Printed Editions features a remarkable nineteenth-century Japanese photograph: two sumo wrestlers facing each other in their starting positions, with a traditionally dressed referee standing behind them.

The image is associated with the work of Felice Beato or Baron Raimund von Stillfried, two influential photographers who helped shape the visual record of nineteenth-century Japan.

THE RITUAL BEFORE THE FIGHT

Sumo is more than a contest of physical strength. Its traditions are deeply connected to Japanese ritual culture, with ceremonies, gestures, and rules developed over centuries.

The two wrestlers, known as rikishi, crouch close to the ground, preparing for the opening confrontation.

Behind them stands the gyōji, the referee, whose ceremonial fan symbolizes his authority over the contest.

But this is not a photograph of an actual tournament.

It is a carefully staged studio portrait, transforming the anticipation of a sumo match into a formal photographic composition.

JAPAN THROUGH THE CAMERA

During the second half of the nineteenth century, photography became an increasingly important medium through which Japan was represented to the outside world.

Photographers such as Felice Beato and Raimund von Stillfried produced images of Japanese occupations, customs, performers, and everyday life.

Many of these photographs were printed using the albumen process and delicately coloured by hand.

Today, they are valuable historical documents — but also reminders that early photography often presented carefully arranged versions of the cultures it depicted.

STRENGTH, STILLNESS AND ANTICIPATION

What makes this photograph remarkable is the contrast between physical power and absolute stillness.

The wrestlers are ready to move, yet the camera holds them in a permanent moment of preparation.

A fraction of time becomes a lasting image.
