Dragons, mythical creatures, waves, and legendary figures became part of a visual language that transformed human skin into a living canvas.
Tattooing was particularly associated with certain urban occupations and social communities, including firefighters and manual workers.
A TRADITION THAT SURVIVED
During the Meiji era, decorative tattooing faced official prohibition. Yet the artistic practice survived, preserving techniques and designs that continue to influence contemporary tattoo culture.
