THE ART OF SUSPENSION

One woman. Three appearances. A moment suspended between movement and stillness.

A woman sits on the edge of a diving board or springboard, her legs hanging freely in space. Her pose is relaxed, almost casual. Yet isolated from its original surroundings, the figure acquires an unexpected sense of weightlessness.

The photograph evokes the visual culture of the 1930s, when photographers increasingly explored the human body through movement, unusual perspectives, repetition, and carefully constructed compositions.

THREE STUDIES OF A WOMAN

For this Reading Frames design, a single archival photographic figure has been extracted from its surroundings and repeated three times at different scales.

The three women are, in fact, one.

Suspended against a black background, the figures appear to occupy different distances and heights. There is no visible landscape, no horizon, and almost no indication of gravity.

What began as a photograph becomes a small visual experiment in space, rhythm, and perception.

THE ART OF SUSPENSION

The title refers both to the apparent suspension of the body and to photography's ability to interrupt the passage of time.

A camera arrests movement. A photograph preserves a fraction of a second. Through repetition and rearrangement, that frozen instant can become an entirely new composition.

The design draws on the visual language of twentieth-century photographic experimentation, while remaining a contemporary reinterpretation rather than a historical photomontage.

THE DESIGN

This black oversized sweatshirt features three monochrome photographic figures arranged diagonally across the front, accompanied by the cream-coloured inscription The Art of Suspension.

The deliberately open composition allows the black fabric to become part of the image. The back remains plain.

Minimalist, slightly surreal, and rooted in the visual possibilities of archival photography.

READING FRAMES — WEARABLE ARCHIVES

Reading Frames is an independent artistic project exploring historical photography, visual culture, and the changing meanings of images.

Our Wearable Archives collection transforms selected photographs into contemporary clothing — sometimes preserving the original image, sometimes reimagining it through repetition, scale, and composition.
