WALL STREET — NEW YORK, 1915

A handful of pedestrians. Five monumental windows. A photograph that helped redefine modern photography.

New York City, 1915.

From the steps of Federal Hall, American photographer Paul Strand (1890–1976) turned his camera toward the recently completed headquarters of J.P. Morgan & Co. at 23 Wall Street.

Morning sunlight cuts across the pavement. Small figures hurry past the building, casting long diagonal shadows. Behind them, enormous dark windows rise from a massive stone façade.

The people appear almost insignificant beside the architecture.

THE BIRTH OF MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY

Strand was among the photographers who helped transform photography into a distinctly modern art form.

Rather than imitating painting, he explored the camera's ability to reveal unexpected structures within everyday reality.

In Wall Street, ordinary pedestrians and architectural forms become an almost abstract composition of verticals, diagonals, light, and shadow.

The photograph is also an image of modern urban life: anonymous individuals moving through a landscape dominated by powerful institutions.

THE DESIGN

This black tote bag features a reproduction of Strand's Wall Street, New York (1915).

The photograph's monumental geometry and subtle tonal contrasts stand against the dark fabric.

No additional lettering is needed. The image carries its own visual rhythm.
