NIKOLA TESLA — CURRENTLY UNBOTHERED

Millions of volts. Spectacular electrical discharges. And a man quietly reading a book.

Colorado Springs, December 1899.

In a darkened laboratory, Nikola Tesla sits beneath an enormous electrical apparatus. Brilliant discharges spread across the room like artificial lightning.

Yet Tesla appears entirely undisturbed, absorbed in his reading.

It is one of the most recognizable photographs in the history of electrical experimentation.

THE EXPERIMENTAL STATION

In 1899, Tesla established a laboratory in Colorado Springs to investigate high-frequency electricity, electrical resonance, and the possibility of transmitting electrical energy over great distances.

His experiments involved an enormous high-voltage resonant transformer, often called his magnifying transmitter, capable of producing spectacular electrical discharges.

These investigations became an important chapter in the history of electrical engineering — and produced some extraordinary scientific photographs.

THE SECRET OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

Despite its apparent realism, this famous image does not show Tesla sitting beside the apparatus while it was operating.

The photograph was created using double exposure.

Photographer Dickenson V. Alley first recorded the electrical discharges in the darkened laboratory. The photographic plate was then exposed again, with the apparatus switched off and Tesla seated calmly in a chair.

Two separate moments became one apparently impossible scene.

The electricity was real. Tesla was real. But they were not photographed together at the same instant.

Long before digital manipulation and artificial intelligence, photography was already capable of creating convincing illusions.

CURRENTLY UNBOTHERED — THE DESIGN

The inscription Currently Unbothered plays with the double meaning of the word current: electric current and something happening in the present.

It also refers to Tesla's remarkable composure in the photograph.

This black sweatshirt features the historical image on the back and understated, vintage-inspired typography on the sleeve.

An archival caption identifies Tesla's experimental station in Colorado Springs in 1899.

The design combines scientific history, photographic illusion, and a subtle visual joke.
