POWERHOUSE MECHANIC — NEW YORK, 1920

A man, a machine, and the monumental beauty of industrial labor. One of the defining photographs of the American Machine Age.

New York, United States, 1920.

This iconic photograph, Powerhouse Mechanic, was created by Lewis Wickes Hine (1874–1940), an American photographer whose work transformed the visual representation of labor in the early twentieth century.

The image shows a young mechanic leaning over a massive steam-powered machine, gripping a wrench as he appears to tighten a bolt.

The man's muscular body follows the curve of the enormous metal structure. Human strength and mechanical power become part of a single geometric composition.

LEWIS HINE AND THE MACHINE AGE

Lewis Hine is best remembered for his documentary photographs exposing child labor in American factories, mines, and mills.

His photographs helped bring public attention to the working conditions of children and contributed to the movement for labor reform.

By the 1920s, Hine had begun exploring another dimension of industrial society: the dignity, skill, and physical presence of adult workers.

Powerhouse Mechanic belongs to this period of what Hine called "interpretive photography."

The scene was carefully posed, rather than simply captured in the course of work. Hine arranged the relationship between the mechanic and the machinery to create a powerful visual statement about human labor.

The photograph is both a portrait of a worker and a celebration of industrial form.

Its circular composition, dramatic proportions, and sculptural treatment of the human body anticipate some of the visual language associated with modernist industrial photography.

THE DESIGN

This MagSafe-compatible clear iPhone case features a warm, sepia-toned reproduction of Hine's historic photograph.

The vertical composition follows the shape of the phone, placing the mechanic and the monumental machinery at the center of the design.

The transparent case combines an archival photographic image with a contemporary everyday object.
