Laura Bullion — The Rose of the Wild Bunch | American Outlaw Hoodie
LAURA BULLION — THE ROSE OF THE WILD BUNCH
A young woman in a man's suit. A detective agency photograph. A life on the other side of the law.
Around 1901, Laura Bullion (1876–1961) was photographed wearing a tailored jacket, white shirt, and bow tie. Her direct gaze and composed expression make the image resemble a formal studio portrait.
Yet this was no ordinary portrait.
The photograph became part of the identification records associated with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which pursued some of the most notorious outlaws of the American West.
THE ROSE OF THE WILD BUNCH
Born in Texas, Laura Bullion worked in a San Antonio brothel before becoming involved with the Wild Bunch, the outlaw gang associated with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
She was romantically involved with gang members William Carver and later Ben Kilpatrick, known as the Tall Texan.
But Bullion was more than an outlaw's companion. She helped the gang dispose of stolen property, forge documents, and evade detection.
In November 1901, she was arrested in St. Louis with stolen banknotes in her possession. She was subsequently imprisoned and released in 1905.
After leaving prison, she settled in Memphis under another name and lived a largely private life until her death in 1961.
THE PHOTOGRAPH
What makes this portrait remarkable is its ambiguity.
The clothing, hairstyle, and formal pose resist the conventional image of a female outlaw in popular Western mythology.
The photograph was made to identify and document a suspected criminal. Today, it also reveals how clothing, gender presentation, and photographic classification intersected at the turn of the twentieth century.
A photograph intended as an instrument of surveillance becomes, more than a century later, an image open to new interpretations.
THE DESIGN
This black unisex hoodie features a large reproduction of Laura Bullion's historical portrait on the back.
