SALVADOR DALÍ AND HIS OCELOT, BABOU

A surrealist, an ocelot, and a photograph that hardly needs an explanation.

New York City, 1965.

Salvador Dalí (1904–1989), one of the most recognizable figures of twentieth-century Surrealism, poses with Babou, his pet ocelot.

With his famously elaborate moustache, wide-eyed expression, and the spotted wild cat beside his face, Dalí creates an extraordinary double portrait.

The photograph was taken by Roger Higgins at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, where Dalí frequently stayed during his visits to the United States.

DALÍ AND BABOU

Dalí became famous not only for his paintings but also for turning his public appearance into a continuous artistic performance.

His eccentric clothing, theatrical gestures, and carefully cultivated image made him one of the most photographed artists of his generation.

Babou, his ocelot, became a familiar companion in this world of public spectacle.

An ocelot is a small wild cat native to the Americas, distinguished by its striking spotted coat.

Dalí reportedly brought Babou to restaurants and hotels, contributing to the legend surrounding the artist's extravagant lifestyle.

In this portrait, the boundary between the artist's personality and his artistic imagination seems almost to disappear.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

Roger Higgins photographed Dalí and Babou in 1965.

The composition brings together two expressive faces: Dalí's exaggerated gaze and the ocelot's alert, spotted head.

It is both a celebrity portrait and a carefully theatrical image of an artist who understood the power of being photographed.

The photograph belongs to the New York World-Telegram & Sun photographic collection, preserved by the Library of Congress.

THE DESIGN

This black Cotton Heritage premium heavyweight T-shirt combines the historical photograph with typography inspired by elegant mid-century New York graphic design.

The front features the black-and-white portrait of Dalí and Babou.

On the back, a warm ivory inscription reads:

SALVADOR DALÍ

And His Ocelot, Babou

ST. REGIS HOTEL · NEW YORK · 1965

The two sides create a complete visual narrative: the photograph and its historical identification.
