WALKER EVANS — COUPLE AT CONEY ISLAND, 1928

Two people overlooking an amusement park. A fleeting moment of intimacy in the spectacle of modern American life.

Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, 1928.

A man and a woman stand close together at a railing, their backs turned toward the camera. Behind them rise the elaborate towers and structures of Luna Park, one of New York's most celebrated amusement parks.

The man places an arm around the woman's waist. She rests her arm against his shoulder.

We cannot see their faces, but the quiet intimacy of their gesture contrasts with the crowded world of entertainment surrounding them.

The photograph was made by Walker Evans (1903–1975), one of the most influential American photographers of the twentieth century.

WALKER EVANS — BEFORE THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Evans is best known for his documentary photographs of American society during the 1930s, particularly his work for the Farm Security Administration.

But this photograph belongs to an earlier period of his career, when he was developing his distinctive interest in ordinary people, public spaces, architecture, and the visual character of American life.

Rather than photographing the attractions of Coney Island directly, Evans turned his camera toward two anonymous visitors.

The amusement park becomes a backdrop to a small, unposed human encounter.

CONEY ISLAND IN THE 1920s

During the 1920s, Coney Island was one of America's most popular destinations for public entertainment.

Its beaches, amusement parks, mechanical rides, and spectacular illuminated architecture attracted enormous crowds.

Luna Park, opened in 1903, was famous for its theatrical structures and elaborate electric lighting.

Evans's photograph captures this world of mass entertainment from an unexpectedly intimate perspective.

THE DESIGN

This black Under Armour athletic T-shirt combines an archival photographic image with typography inspired by New York graphic design of the late 1920s.

On the front, elegant ivory lettering identifies the photograph:

On the back, the original photograph presents the scene itself.

The two sides form a single visual composition: the front provides the historical identification, while the back reveals the image.
