The Shroud of Turin — The Image That Photography Revealed | Archival Hoodie
THE SHROUD OF TURIN — THE IMAGE THAT PHOTOGRAPHY REVEALED
An ancient-looking image. A photographic revelation. A mystery that continues to divide historians, scientists, and believers.
This black hoodie from Reading Frames — Wearable Archives features a reproduction inspired by the Shroud of Turin, one of the most widely studied and debated objects in the history of religious imagery.
THE IMAGE ON THE CLOTH
Preserved in Turin, Italy, the Shroud is a long piece of linen bearing the faint frontal and dorsal images of a man.
For centuries, it has been venerated by many Christians as the burial cloth of Jesus.
Yet its origin remains contested.
In 1988, radiocarbon testing by three laboratories dated the sampled linen to approximately 1260–1390. The findings support a medieval origin, although some researchers continue to challenge their interpretation.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC REVELATION — 1898
In May 1898, Italian photographer Secondo Pia was permitted to photograph the Shroud.
When he developed his glass photographic plates, he encountered something extraordinary.
The negative revealed a much clearer, positive-looking image of the human face than could be seen directly on the cloth.
Photography had transformed an indistinct image into something suddenly recognizable.
The discovery initiated a new chapter in the history of the Shroud and raised profound questions about images, evidence, perception, and belief.
THE DESIGN
The subdued brown-toned reproduction on the back creates an intentionally restrained composition against black fabric.
Rather than turning the image into a conventional graphic, the design preserves its faded, enigmatic appearance.
An image that does not immediately reveal itself.
An invitation to look again.
