THE KISS OF DEATH — MILLE MIGLIA, 1957
One kiss. One photograph. A moment remembered because of what happened next.
Italy, May 12, 1957.
Known as The Kiss of Death (Il Bacio della Morte), this photograph captures actress Linda Christian (1923–2011) kissing Spanish racing driver Alfonso de Portago (1928–1957) during the final running of the Mille Miglia in its original high-speed road-racing format.
De Portago sits in his Ferrari wearing a helmet and goggles. Christian leans into the cockpit, her hair covered by a patterned scarf. Behind them, spectators watch and smile. It looks like an ordinary farewell.
THE LAST KISS
The Mille Miglia was a grueling Italian road race covering roughly 1,000 miles on public roads. On May 12, 1957, de Portago competed in a Ferrari 335 S with American co-driver Edmund Nelson.
Later that day, near Guidizzolo, the Ferrari suffered a tire failure and crashed into spectators. De Portago, Nelson, and nine spectators were killed, including five children.
The disaster helped bring an end to the Mille Miglia as a high-speed competition on public roads.
WHY THE IMAGE ENDURES
Only after the accident did the affectionate scene acquire its tragic meaning. Published and circulated in the press, the photograph became famous as The Kiss of Death. The title describes what viewers know in retrospect, not what the people in the frame could have known.
This is what makes the image so arresting: a fleeting private gesture, witnessed by a crowd, becomes a public record of a final goodbye.
THE DESIGN
This black AS Colour T-shirt features a two-sided design inspired by 1950s motor racing.
On the front: the historic black-and-white photograph of Christian and de Portago.
On the back: cream and red racing-style lettering, speed lines, and a checkered-flag motif surrounding the words:
YOU NEVER KNOW
WHICH KISS
WILL BE THE LAST.
The inscription is a contemporary reflection on chance, intimacy, and the way an ordinary moment can change meaning after the fact.
