THE ABSURDITY OF WAR — TWO FACES OF WORLD WAR I
One photograph is haunting. The other seems almost comical. Both belong to the strange visual world of the First World War.
This striking double-sided T-shirt from Reading Frames — Printed Editions brings together two archival photographs that reveal very different aspects of modern warfare.
FRONT — A SOLDIER'S FACE
A close-up portrait of an unidentified soldier from the First World War era. Beneath his steel helmet, his eyes stare directly into the camera.
There is no battlefield in sight. No explosion, no weapon, no visible enemy. Just a face.
The photograph has sometimes been associated with the psychological effects of trench warfare, but the identity and personal circumstances of the soldier remain unconfirmed.
What we can see is enough: an unusually direct encounter between the camera and a man in uniform.
BACK — GERMAN SOLDIERS AND A DONKEY, 1915
Two German soldiers pose beside a donkey. All three are wearing gas masks.
The photograph, preserved in historical image collections, dates to 1915 — the year chemical warfare became a terrifying new reality on the Western Front.
Military animals, including horses, mules, and donkeys, were also vulnerable to poison gas. Protecting them required improvised equipment and increasingly specialized masks.
Today the photograph looks almost like a scene from absurdist theatre. Yet behind its strange humour lies a deadly serious reality.
BETWEEN TRAGEDY AND ABSURDITY
On one side, the individual human face. On the other, a bizarre tableau of men and an animal transformed by military technology.
Together, these photographs capture a contradiction at the heart of the Great War: the same conflict that produced immense human suffering also generated images of startling, sometimes unsettling absurdity.
