A LONG REACH — 1930s BATHING BEAUTY

One woman. One outstretched arm. A playful fragment of 1930s photographic glamour.

A young woman in a vintage swimsuit stretches her arm outward in a carefully composed photographic pose.

The image, believed to date from the 1930s, belongs to a visual world in which swimwear, physical freedom, and the modern female figure became increasingly prominent subjects of popular photography.

The woman's identity and the photographer's name remain unknown.

But the pose has a character of its own.

THE AGE OF THE BATHING BEAUTY

During the 1920s and 1930s, women's swimwear underwent a remarkable transformation.

Heavy bathing garments gradually gave way to shorter, more closely fitted designs. Hollywood stars, fashion magazines, and commercial photographers helped popularize a new image of the modern woman — athletic, confident, and increasingly comfortable being photographed in leisurewear.

The bathing beauty became a familiar figure in publicity portraits, postcards, and illustrated magazines.

These photographs were rarely casual snapshots. Gestures, posture, lighting, and clothing were carefully arranged to create an image of effortless elegance.

A LONG REACH — THE DESIGN

For this Reading Frames composition, the woman has been carefully separated from her original photograph and placed vertically along one leg of a pair of black joggers.

Her extended arm transforms a horizontal photographic pose into an unexpected vertical silhouette.

On the opposite leg appears the inscription:

A LONG REACH

The title plays with the literal gesture of reaching and the suggestion of something just beyond our grasp.

The two elements form a deliberately asymmetric design — part archival photography, part contemporary visual experiment.

THE JOGGERS

Black joggers featuring a vintage photographic figure on one leg and cream-coloured, vintage-inspired typography on the other.

The composition is designed to work with the movement and proportions of the garment, allowing a historical photograph to become part of an everyday silhouette.

READING FRAMES — WEARABLE ARCHIVES

Reading Frames is an independent artistic project exploring historical photography, visual culture, and the changing meanings of archival images.

Our Wearable Archives collection transforms selected photographs into contemporary clothing, preserving fragments of photographic history while exploring new relationships between images, typography, and design.
